While information technology and outsourcing has earned India the nickname as “the world’s back office,” the sector employs a fraction of India’s population — only 2 million of India’s more than 500 million workers, according to NASSCOM, an IT and business process outsourcing trade organization.

So where do the majority of people work in India? The International Labor Organization and economists say as many as 95 percent of the workforce makes a living in what is known as the informal or unorganized sector.

Korba District Magistrate Ashok Agrawal said that efforts were on to rescue those still trapped in the rubble.

“The rescue operation is on. Ambulances have taken the injured to the hospital. We are doing our best to save the trapped workers. 10 bodies have been recovered so far. We are hopeful to get the debris cleared within two days,” said Agarwal

According to eyewitnesses, there was heavy rain at the time of the accident and a lighting strike could have caused the chimney to go collapse.

Sonia Maria Sotomayor is a great Judge, and I salute her. Sworn in a Justice of the United States Supreme Court on August 8, she is the 111th Justice of that court, its first Hispanic Justice and only the third woman to hold the post.

She is a symbol of gender power, a fine paradigm of feminine title to judicial authority to dispense justice at the national level. The glory is not only for womanhood in the U.S., she is now a symbol of woman’s super-stature in gender performance across all of humanity. Sitting on the U.S. Supreme Court Bench, she will be an inspiration for women in all countries whose claims to office are often neglected because the masculine gender occupies an unjust majority in all the three great constitutional instrumentalities. Even among judges in Victorian England women were rarely elevated to the high bench.

The leading elected politician in Indian Kashmir resigned today over allegations that he was involved in a sex trafficking and underage prostitution racket.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the top official in the disputed territory, was accused of featuring on a list of influential men who allegedly benefitted from a sex ring used by the Indian political elite.

Mr Abdullah denied claims by the opposition dating back to a 2006 sex scandal, but told the state legislature, “I want to resign till I am cleared of this false allegation. I cannot work till I am proved innocent. It is a baseless allegation but I won’t be at peace with myself until I am proven innocent.”

Colleagues in the ruling National Conference party begged him to reverse his decision.

Metals and realty bore the brunt of a dramatic sell-off by foreign funds, sending the benchmark Sensex spiralling down by a huge 437.63 points, the third-biggest fall of the year.

Extremely weak trends in European markets and US futures weighed on the local bourses.

The Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share barometer settled the day at 14,665.92, down 437.63 points or 2.90 per cent from its previous close.

Investors resorted to across-the-board selling as foreign institutional investors began pulling out from equity in later afternoon trade.

Bonanza Portfolio Assistant Vice-President Avinash Gupta said: “Falling metal prices and China giving incentives for export of steel products induced profit-taking and it seems a correction is setting in. The market is expected to be range-bound with rises/falls between 4,250 and 4,500.”

The world’s number one retailer Wal-Mart opened its first sales venture in India on Saturday as part of an ambitious plan to establish a foothold in the country’s vast consumer market.

The US discount chain has teamed up with Bharti Enterprises, parent of India’s biggest mobile firm Bharti Airtel, in a wholesale joint venture to be called Best Price Modern Wholesale.

“We have put in a lot of planning and preparation over the past 12 months and are delighted all the hard work will now bear fruit as we open the doors of our first cash-and-carry store in India,” said Wal-Mart India head Raj Jain.

The opening of Wal-Mart’s first “big box” outlet in Amritsar city in the wheat-bowl northern state of Punjab, is a high-stakes one for the US retailer, which has been expanding internationally to grow its revenues.

“India is first of all a country with close to 1.2 billion people and a strongly growing economy which is driven by personal consumption,” said Jain.
